Reviews
This figure rules, plain and simple. He looks so much like movie Hank, with great detail on the 'fur' texture. Very well articulated, as well... the jacket restricts arm motion to some degree, but not so much that he won't be in the running for most articulated figure in your collection at his size. His upper arms can't be raised *too* much higher than you see in the picture, but if you don't need him to do jumping jacks, you'll be amazed at how many ways he can be posed. I wish the picture showed a close-up of the knees and elbows, but do you see the build-a-figure arm, the way the upper arm and forearm attach not to each other, but to a small "elbow" piece? Beast's knees and elbows are the same, allowing for more posing possibilities *and* less of the doll-joint look at once. Wrists also turn and bend, ankles also turn, even the toes can be raised or lowered, fitting for the ape-like Beast. He can bend at the waist *and* stomach, as well as twist at the waist. He can't look up much higher than straight ahead, but the head can tilt down. If you've got a book the right size to fit in his hands, he can sit down and 'read' it. (They really shoulda provided one.) In all areas except for tilting his head back or raising his upper arms very high, this figure's more poseable than *you* are. The face is so much like the movie character you'll swear you hear Kelsey Grammer's voice, and even the eyes have irises and whites.
Where I live, he's only available in a two-pack with Colossus or Wolverine - I forget - and the two-pack costs well over $20. I've heard of them being sold individually elsewhere, but if they're not where you are, getting any in this series separately at a good online price would be your best bet, especially if you can get 'em from the same seller and combine shipping.
Excellent Movie-Based Beast! If you are looking to expand your line of superhero movie-based action figures, the Marvel Legends X-3 Beast is a must have, and being a big fan of Kelsey Grammer from "Frasier", this is doubly cool to me. The likeness to Dr. Hank McCoy, as played by Kelsey, is amazing in this highly detailed action figure. The size seems to be fine too, since the back of the figure's card describes him as 5'11, so I guess that's how tall he was supposed to be in the movie. Standing next to my other figures, he looks about right. The figure is highly articulated, though it is true that his jacket limits some arm movement. He looks great though, and since I mainly bought him as a display piece, no problems here! There are two pieces of Annihilus, a large figure you can build by collecting this wave of Marvel Legends figures, but since I am focused on movie figures, I don't expect to be making him myself.
Tiny BeastOK, this one is weird. It is an ML figure but instead of being based on a comic version of the character it is based on the movie. Also, it is in a different scale (slightly smaller) presumably to fit in with X movie based figures. It's a bizarre choice to me. As far as it goes though the figure does bear a pretty good likeness in the face to Beast from X3. The blue though is a bit too dark really and the jacket restricts most of the arm articulation. It's really not a very fun figure and may only interest those who need a beast for X movie related toys or if you want to finish your Annihilus build a figure. Beast comes with an arm and a leg (must be a tax collector) of Annihilus.
As far as the build a figure (BAF), Annihilus, goes he is an interesting mix. We've kind of been out of the whole extra big BAF's like Galactus and the Sentinel and others for a while now but the past BAF's have been just as good and are still really big guys meant to be in scale with the 6" Legends figures (not that Galactus really was in scale. Hey Hasbro, a big Celestial would be cool). I'd give Annihilus 4 stars overall. He has a really good sculpt with lots of detail and a great assortment of articulation points. He has extra big leathery wings, a menacingly alien face, clawed articulated hands and a pink (?) torso and gloves. Did I say pink? That's the only thing about this guy. For a real threatening Negative Zone alien also known as The Living Death That Walks, pink seems like a pretty feminine color. But maybe he's secure in his masculinity. In some areas he was shipped with an alternate purple color rather than the pink to man him up a bit but it's still pretty weird. Oh, well. Just be careful, if you are a perfectionist, that you don't mix up different colored parts.
