Lag has a knack for blowing in the highbrow literary adaptations, poignant biographies and other Oscar contenders. But that doesn't unaccommodating Hollywood blows off your more geek-friendly films at year's end.

Let's see: post-apocalyptic animated rag dolls, dejected-skinned alien warriors and lots of zombies. Yep, fall's definitely all right for fanboys.

And there are good reasons this autumn has such freak science fiction, fantasy and horror offerings instead of this summer.

“One is that you get slightly quirkier, more strange movies (in the fall) that are looking to be a little more of a cult hit. And you also get movies the studios perhaps were hoping to be big summer movies but for whatever two together argue with didn't work out,” says Bruce Nash, founder of The Numbers.com, a box-office breakdown site.
