Identity Crisis Series: Zatanna
From the mega-hot DC Comics 'Identity Crisis' mini-series written by suspense novelist Brad Meltzer comes this line of collector's action figures. Among the first released earlier this year is this stellar member of the JLA (Justice League of America): the mistress of magic herself, Zatanna.

Wearing the blue & white costume she had in the 1980's (presumably, this is in reference to the flashbacks depicted in the mini-series), this expertly crafted rendition of 'Zatanna' is simply exquisite. The points of articulation are generally minimal, but once displayed on the 'Identity Crisis' stand provided, she will make an excellent addition to anyone's collection of action figures as a staunch representative of the JLA.

If you can find this figure at its current reduced price before it fades out of circulation, your purchase will really be a steal.

Zatanna: The JLA's Mistress of Magic
From Wave 4 of the best-selling Alex Ross-designed 'Justice' series, Zatanna Zatara is the Justice League's sultry sorceress who can conjure up mystic spells with simple verbal commands spoken backwards making her a formidable foe for any super-powered menace.

When I saw the promotional photos of what this vibrant rendition of Zatanna would look like, I was really excited about adding this figure to my collection as its striking likeness to the character was nothing short of phenomenal. However, when compared to the standard promotional photo featured on the packaging, the actual figure has one unfortunate flaw: her glimmering eyes are non-existent.

Specifically, in the promotional photo, her purplish eyes practically twinkle giving her face a charming, confident smirk. Yet, when viewed close up, the figure's eyes are inexplicably much smaller and seem faint at best. Without the necessary detail applied to her eyes, the result is that Zatanna looks here rather pale and haggard without any sense of a facial expression.

While this artistic flaw doesn't ruin the figure, since the product otherwise appears as advertised, it is still disappointing, nonetheless, for those consumers expecting the radiant picture featured on the side of the box.

Regardless of my one criticism, I highly recommend this action figure for fans of Zatanna and for anyone who enjoys action figure collecting. As a side note, the accessories are a magician's wand along with the standard silver & black Justice figure display base.

Zatanna: The JLA's Sultry Sorceress (1:6 Scale)
The Justice League's feisty magician, Zatanna Zatara, is featured in DC Direct's latest edition to its 1:6 scale deluxe collector figure series. As a newcomer to this ongoing series, I didn't quite know what to expect other than an amazing product of my favorite heroine based upon the promotional photos I had viewed.

At first, I was most impressed with the elaborate wraparound packaging. It confirmed my belief that I had purchased an awesome figure. The enclosed accessories certainly lived up to my expectations, with the following: several interchangeable hands; a wand; a magician's rabbit; a support base; and a supposed tell-all novel, "Hex Appeal," that Zatanna had authored. As for the wardrobe, the Zatanna figure wears a well-produced black stage magician's costume (identifical to to the promotional photos) including a hat to insert the rabbit.

However, what really threw me about this figure is Zatanna's face. The promotional photo clearly implies that her elegant face is made of porcelain with well-defined make-up (like mascara and lipstick) and realistic facial features (like thick eyebrows). The reality I discovered is that the face is inexplicably made of cheapo rubber with facial features more closely resembling that of a generic Barbie doll (i.e. her thin, squiggly eyebrows look like they were drawn in with a black pen). In all fairness, though, at least the face still appears decent from a distance, but beware: it is definitely not the same as what the fantastic promotional photos promise. At best, the face bears a vague resemblance to the photos.

Otherwise, minus my mini-rant about Zatanna's shoddy face, the promotional photos are pretty much spot on regarding this figure. I should note re: the extra hands as an accessory - interchangeable hands sound fine in theory, but switching them back and forth is a pain and might cause damage to your purchase. At least, the elevated support base works great, but you will need to find a tall enough shelf in your collection for this Zatanna figure because it will tower over almost everything else.

The bottom line, for me, is that, despite my disappointment, the figure was still well worth the purchase price to add it to my collection.

Rating: 8.5/10 (Even with a 1.5 point deduction for the mediocre face, this Zatanna figure is a great collector's item!)

DC Direct Presents: Silver Age Zatanna
From DC Direct comes this rendition of the sultry sorceress, Zatanna, as she first appeared in comic books during the Silver Age. From my perspective, this depiction of Zatanna (as an action figure) is a terrific addition to any action figure collection. The criteria I am setting forth are as follows:

1. Does this Zatanna figure accurately resemble its promotional photos?

Yes! As most collectors know, promotional photos (particularly, ones made public months in advance of the figure's actual release) can be rather deceptive, as one terrific figure is promised but then, the released figure will pale in comparison to the photo. In this case, I would say the promotional photo and the Zatanna figure are at least 95%+ identical. In other words, the resemblance is dead on.

I give DC Direct the highest marks on making good on its advertising for this figure.

Score: 10/10

2. Does the figure have much articulation (for display purposes)?

Honestly, I don't have any idea as to the number of articulation points this figure supposedly has. All I know is that she has very limited flexibility in terms of basic movement, so there are only a few display poses to choose from. As a collector, though, my only concern is that a figure can stand proportionally on its own. Zatanna meets this requirement, as she can stand perfectly on the display base provided it is propped up against a wall. Without a wall, there is a pretty good chance at some point the figure will topple over.

Score: 8/10

3. Do the figure's accessories enhance the figure?

The only accessory provided is the display base. Suffice to say, you won't be getting any bonus features with the Silver Age Zatanna (not even a wand).

Score: 7.5/10

4. Is the figure an excellent investment (or as a recommended addition to an action figure collection)?

Definitely, yes! If you can still find it, I highly recommend purchasing one, particularly as this is the very first Zatanna figure produced by DC Direct.

If you can find them to make a trilogy, I would also suggest locating the excellent Zatanna figures produced in the "Justice: Series 4" and "Identity Crisis," as they depict in her classic 1980's JLA blue & white costume and in her contemporary magician's costume.

Score: 10/10

5. What do I think, overall?

If compared fairly to the other Zatanna figures produced by DC Direct in the last few years, I would say that the "Justice: Series 4" and "Identity Crisis" versions are probably better sculptures. Nonetheless, if you want a near-perfect rendition of Zatanna, as she originally appeared, in all her magical glory, you can't miss with this one.

I wish you luck in finding this figure, but it you can obtain one, it is definitely a treasure.

My final score: 9/10
First ever figure of the JLA's favorite magician
When I first found out they were making a figure out of the awesome magician Zatanna, I was thrilled....she had become a favorite of mine since she was in both the Justice League comics and also put in an appearance in a 1992 episode of "Batman: The Animated Series," fittingly entitled: "Zatanna."
As for the figure itself, it is beautifully sculpted and has nine points of articulation and comes with a display base. The base is necessary to stand Zatanna and that is the only drawback, she does have leg poseability but she can't get into a base-free standing pose. The fishnets they use on the figure are "real" and made of some sort of fabric though. I really do enjoy the figure as it is, except for maybe the legs not being of much use, but it is a nice representation of a classic DC female.

And from what I find out, I’m not the only one who thinks so. The proprietor of my LCS told me that they’ve never had more pre-orders for a model than this, DCD’s latest annexe to the Women of the DC Cosmos effigy word. I picked up mine last week and was only allowed a peer before handing it over to be wrapped up as a Forebear’s Day bonus (Forefather’s Day is the first Sunday of September in Oz). At most from that glimpse, I knew that none of those pre-orderers (I relish creating new words!) would have origin for non-fulfilment.

In a few words, this icon is fitting grassland hubba-bubba-liciously spectacular. It captures the look of the Adam Hughes counter art (CATWOMAN #58) mignonne much extraordinarily, which includes no fishnets. When I first saw the previews for this bronze I brainwork they would be added later. The Deadly Canary colossus was first shown with hatless legs and then tailor-made with fishnets, but this isn’t the suitcase here, because Hughes drew her without them.

Squad K lures the three fugitives out of hiding, and General Lane has forced Reactron to be put on the team. When Chris realizes during the fight that part of the frame-up is to make everyone think the Kryptonians have sabotaged Metropolis’ sewers, he surrenders. While that might have been a good idea if there were uncorrupted officials involved, Reactron takes the opportunity to kill members of Squad K so he can get his claws on Supergirl.

Pere Perez is one of the few who can do inks and pencils both. The backgrounds are serviceable, and you can tell the directions were followed to display the scene. It’s a good job, but not stellar. Another, more famous Perez has a habit of adding extra stuff in wherever he can, and Pere could have doe it here and there in places, but didn’t. Still, at least the dual pencils/inks job wasn’t a disaster like it usually is with other artists.

The Captain Atom feature finally starts to make sense, a little. Steel’s niece, Natasha Irons, has helped to spring Cap Atom from his brainwashers, and we learn that we are in Mirabai’s magical realm. He was used to kill any opposition to Mirabai, so we have yet another hero who has tons of blood on his hands due to mental/magical coercion. Major Force shows up at the end, presumably to bring Cap Atom back under control. Cafu is still the artist, and we still have these bland scenes with precious few details, and the art alone tells me this is not enough. I know DC will be switching out the backup features that aren’t performing well. I hope they finish this story and put somebody else in here. I miss Mon-el already.
