Beastie BoyGarfield Logan, a/k/a "Gar" (to his friends), a/k/a Beast Boy, a/k/a Changeling got bit by a green monkey gets an illness then is saved by his parents giving him an experimental formula. This formula cures him but changes his skin green and grants him the ability to turn into any animal - which in return grants him all kinds of different powers. Oh to live in comic book world! This is the DC Universe Wave 10 Beast Boy. Wave 10 is also known as the Wal-Mart exclusive set which, oddly enough, is almost impossible to find at any Wal-Mart, go figure.... I exaggerate of course, I'm sure you can find a set at Wal-Mart but it's not as easy as it SHOULD be.
For Kids:
Well, it's DCU so he's sturdy and well made and he comes with an animal accessory. He's a more kid like character so that would appeal. And there's currently a Saturday morning cartoon, Teen Titans, in which he's featured. I'd say on every level there's no reason a kid would not love this guy. Now if only they could put in a shape change button.
For Adults:
There's a surprising amount of sculpt detail here. The first thing you may notice is that he's short but that's by design. He's a teen and has always been on the slight side. I was surprised at how tough he looks though. One thing I should point out is that while I mentioned the Teen Titans cartoon above this is not that version of the character (you know, really short, weird and anime) this is a more "realistic" comic book version. He's got a very strong and determined face and looks tough actually. There's lots of good detail in his hair and the ears are pointed. The torso and arms are basic but the forearms are covered in sculpted hair. He wears a belt that has a cool round buckle and sculpted links. Hips and legs are standard but the shoes look really good as well with sculpted buckles and toes - they look a lot like high top sneakers.
His light green skin is clean as is his darker green hair and the tiny green irises of his eyes are a good touch of detail. The color scheme of his costume is black and purple with a silver belt. The colors are balanced well and all cleanly done. I only found a couple of slop spots where purple got into the black. My only gripe is that little "TM DC Comics, made in China" jazz that is usually hidden or sculpted on the figure somewhere is printed right on BB's purple butt. Maybe there was nowhere else to put it where it would be hidden but man it's an eyesore. I mean I'm not staring at his butt or anything but you turn him around and there it is.
Articulation includes a cut neck (may be a ball but since it doesn't tilt...), ball/pin shoulders, pin elbows and cut wrists. He's got the ab crunch a cut waist and fully moveable hip joints, pin knees and pin ankles. These are standard for this line, enough for plenty of poses while the figure still looks great.
He comes with a green falcon that is well sculpted and painted. It's nice and is, of course, supposed to be BB transformed into a falcon. As an adult collector there's not much you can do with it though - you know - other than look at it and say that's Beast Boy as a falcon. On the other hand a kid may have much more fun swooping it around. He also comes with his piece of Imperiex.
I was surprised with how much I ended up liking this guy. Only some small paint issues and his butt tattoo hold him back from 5 star status but I'd easily place him at 4 to 4 ½.
Imperiex is a pretty cool collect and connect (CC) figure. His is black and red armor and cape with lots of gold highlights and every surface is sculpted. It's really colorful while being imposing at the same time. His face is skeletal with exposed teeth and menacing red eyes in taught wrinkled skin. But he has two issues. One, his head pops into the neck on a really long peg that just drops down into his body so his head just kind of floats, what I mean is there is no tightness to the joint at all so it's like a bobble head if you move him around. A really weird choice - he looks fine standing still but you have to finagle the head around to get it just right. Second is his size. You see Imperiex is supposed to be a planetary threat and huge in size but you wouldn't know it from this nine inch figure. Yeah, I know the days of Galactus and Sentinel 14 to 16 inch figures are behind us (for now) but this guy looks like maybe some Fourth World warrior or something not the living embodiment of entropy. Even with all that he's still a four star figure though if only for the amount of detail they packed into him.
