Opposition parties in the House of Representatives have asked the Nigerian president, Umaru Yar’Adua, and members of the executive arm of government to use the period of the Ramadan to reconcile with Nigerians by faithfully implementing the 2009 Budget as passed by the National Assembly.
The leader of the minority in the House, Mohammed Ndume, who stated this in a message to Muslims on the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitr, said that if the federal government had been implementing the national budgets with sincerity in the last 10 years, the country would have been better off.
The House disapproved the poor implementation of this year’s budget and threatened to invoke the provisions of section 143 of the 1999 Constitution to remove President Umaru Yar’Adua if he failed to fully implement the budget.
It also faulted President Yar’Adua’s claim that there was a shortfall in revenue generation, disclosing that the federal government’s actual revenue (expendable fund) between January and April 2009 alone was N27.98 billion higher than the budgeted figures during the first four months of the year.
