Piedmont Natural Gas in Charlotte has announced that it will provide $50,000 in assistance to the Red Cross and other agencies to assist those in eastern North Carolina impacted by the massive tornado storm last weekend.
The State notes that the storm was the most active system of tornadoes on record in North Carolina history. The National Weather Service has identified 25 tornadoes that touched down across the state, leading to 23 deaths. President Obama has declared 18 counties as major disaster areas. Governor Beverly Perdue is seeking low-interest loans for farmers and loans and grants to help the more than 800 families who lost homes or businesses.
PNG CEO Tom Skains said in a written statement: “We know these storms have tragically touched the lives of many across eastern North Carolina, and our hearts go out to them as they rebuild their lives and their communities. These are our neighbors and our friends and we realize the effort to rebuild and start over will be both painful and difficult. Hopefully this assistance will help the process along in a meaningful way.”
