W hen somebody "goes missing," the public thinks it's natural to call out the search-and-rescue (SAR) dogs and they will do their job of bringing the lost person home, no problem. That job is often complicated, and does not always end well. But the dog must be rewarded and encouraged in its natural work of "play" -- trailing and finding (or not) the lost person, SAR handler Estelle Purvis told leaders of the Colorado Mountain Club and Shining Mountains Group at a Safety Seminar in Rocky Mountain National Park last Saturday.
Purvis is on her third SAR dog -- Thunder, a 7.5-year-old German shepherd -- in 20 years of voluntary SAR work. She volunteers/is called on for missions
