Timeless Captain America
I first took notice of comic book statues in the late 90s, when a relatively unknown artist by the name of Randy Bowen released statues of Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Doom, and original Captain America. These sculptures had well proportioned physiques, subtle facial expressions and poses, and unique bases. They aren't as detailed as say, Clayburn Moore's Barbarian statue or even Bowen's own Death Dealer statue, but he captured the timeless poses of each character as a comic book fan would imagine them in real life. This new and improved Cap statue just arrived and does not disappoint.

As one reviewer points out, a few details are different from the advertised photos, including details of the jaw area, head feathers, and color shading. This was the case with the Thor statue as well, with less-than-appealing results. However, the changes work well for this Captain America statue. The faded gold color of the base emblem doesn't distract the viewer from the statue itself, and darker blue costume gives added realism. His mouth and jaw are less protruding, which projects a more reserved and humble-looking persona.

Not What It Seems
I purchased this sculpture recently and I disliked it immensely because several things were changed for the worse that not only affected the quality but were also done without informing the customer.

The well crafted and detailed wings on the head were replaced with an unimaginative dull variation. The bright, shiny, candy blue coloring that can be seen in the images has been replaced with a standard, dull blue finish instead that just looks lifeless. The face was re-sculpted and lastly the beautiful base shown in the picture with it's brightly golden Presidential Seal has been replaced with a lackluster base with a seal that is nearly as black as the rest of the base and almost unnoticeable.

The pictures shown by Bowen Designs here and elsewhere are misleading. They are actually those of the prototype sculpture. The one that Bowen Designs ships to people like you or I has several drastic changes that take away from the uniqueness of the piece.

I’ve never reviewed a Bowen bust before, so here we go. I scored a Bowen Captain America, the first translation. Now I’ll specify unaltered up that I’m not a fan of most Bowen busts. The lion's share of them look like they a moment ago cut out part of a full greatness idol, and I don’t find their bases very stimulating. There’s a few I’ve seen that’re entirely cold, like the Ultron mini bust, but yeah, not a fan in extensive.

New Louis Brandeis stamp to be dedicated Sept. 24

A commemorative stamp with the image of Justice Louis D. Brandeis will be released as part of the United States Postal Service's 2009 commemorative stamp program at a dedication ceremony that will take place at Brandeis University on Sept. 24.



The 2009 Commemorative Stamp Program recognizes the achievements of four prominent United States Supreme Court Justices. The other Justices whose images will appear on the commemorative stamps are Joseph Story, Felix Frankfurter and William J. Brennan Jr. The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee in Arlington, Virginia oversaw the selection process for the justices. The stamps will go on sale Aug. 23.



University President Jehuda Reinharz and James Holland, the postmaster general of Boston, will dedicate the new Louis Brandeis stamp at the base of the statue of Justice Brandeis located on campus. Justice Brandeis' grandson Frank Gilbert will speak at the ceremony, and William Bowen, the University's "singing postman," will
