Venerable Old Greenwich farmhouse for sale
Imagine being able to own 72 acres of farmland with a farmhouse for a grand total of $8,500.
Joseph Dillaway Sawyer did just that, purchasing the farm of Sabina Bowen , widow of William Bowen, in Old Greenwich, on July 31, 1886.
Later, he bought the adjoining William Rose farm, along with the farm of Thomas E. Bowen , Sabina and William's son, and the Peter Jessup place near the Rippowam Mills, ultimately becoming the owner of 250 acres.
Sawyer and his family moved into the Bowen farmhouse, renovated it and eventually moved it 1,400 feet to a new location.
Today, the more than 6,400-square-foot home in Colonial style has six bedrooms, 4.5 baths, two fireplaces and multiple bays for the family cars, according to Paula H. Waldman of Prudential Connecticut Realty , who has listed the house at less than
$2.8 million.
The white clapboard and fieldstone manor house has a high, peaked gable in front, newly pointed stonewalls at the base and an old porte-cochere, or "coach gate," that allows guests to avoid any unfortunate weather conditions.
